Many of us won’t have been alive for the battle of Britain, but that doesn’t mean that we forget the bravy and sacrifice of those who put their lives on the line by defending our skies. This event marks the 85th anniversary of this Luftwaffe assault, and Spitfire and Hurricane fighter planes decisively acting again it, preventing a German invasion and changing the course of the Second World War.
On Sunday 14th September 2025, Stamford will honour that legacy with its annual Battle of Britain commemoration.
-
10:30am – Wreath-laying at the War Memorial, followed by a procession from the Town Hall to Broad Street.
-
A parade through town (Starting at Star Lane) will include local cadets from 2071 Squadron, members of the Royal British Legion (who have also led the recent refurbishment of the War Memorial and various WWII events), and serving RAF Wittering personnel.
-
10:50am – Stamford Brass (band) will lead a parade up Broad Street.
-
11:43am – A highlight for many: the RAF Lancaster bomber flypast.
-
A commemorative service also take place from the balcony of Browne’s Hospital, with readings and a special poem from Stamford’s Poet Laureate, Ross Ayres.
The RAF Lancaster flypast (bomber) is a highlight for many, planned for 11.43am.
Note: There will be road closures from 7am to approximately 1:30pm on Sunday as result of this commemoration event.
