Stamford has a lively sporting scene, with clubs and facilities that cater to all ages and abilities. Whether you’re into team competition, or casual fitness, the town offers plenty of ways to get active and meet people. Here’s a round-up of some of the main sports clubs in and around Stamford.
Tennis & Racquet Sports
Stamford Tennis Club
Stamford Tennis Club is boasts five outdoor courts and a well-established coaching programme. Members enjoy everything from relaxed social play to junior coaching and competitive league fixtures throughout the year.
Stamford Squash Club
Based on Conduit Road, Stamford Squash Club provides courts for squash and regular coaching for players of all levels. There’s a league system and courts are available Monday to Friday from 5.40pm and all day on the weekends and can be booked on the site by members.
Stamford Badminton Club
The Stamford Badminton Club offers both social games and competitive badminton. Their season runs from September to April with club nights on Tuesdays (for beginners) and Thursdays (for senior members and experienced juniors). There’s a summer season from May. There are opportunities to compete and play against other teams in leagues across Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Rutland, Northamptonshire and Leicestershire.
There’s also Padel Coaching at Woolfoxthrough ‘access tennis’, and Padel X have submitted plans for a Padel court in Stamford also. If you know of any more local padel facilities or clubs / teams do let us know!
Team Sports
Stamford Rugby Club
Stamford Rugby Club fields has both mens and womens teams, as well as juniors. Founded in 1902, it welcomes players of all standards and ages (from a ‘micros’ team to veterans!). Regular fixtures are played during the season, alongside social events that bring members and supporters together.
Stamford Town Cricket Club
Founded in 1873, Stamford Cricket Club is based at Uffington Road and offers cricket for both juniors and adults. Its teams compete in the Lincolnshire leagues, training takes place regularly, and the ground—with its new clubhouse—provides a picturesque setting for matches. New players are always welcome!
Stamford AFC
Nicknamed The Daniels (after Daniel Lambert), Stamford’s football club competes in the Southern League Premier Division Central, and has a significant local following. Founded in 1896, home games are played at the 2000 capacity (250 seated) Zeeco Stadium, and the club also runs youth development programmes and community projects to encourage the next generation of players.
Blackstones FC
A Stamford based football club (established in 1918) , competing in The United Counties League (Premier division – North) in 2025/26, where they take on the likes of boston town and Grantham. They’re located on The Sports Field, Lincoln Rd, Stamford, PE9 1UU. You can keep up to speed with them on their Facebook page.
Golf, Bowls, Runners and Cycling Clubs
Burghley Park Golf Club
Set within the historic Burghley Estate, this 18-hole course is surely one of the region’s most scenic. The club has modern facilities, a clubhouse, and a busy social calendar. Both seasoned golfers and newcomers are able to join, take lessons, or simply enjoy a round. Burghley Park Golf Club, in 1890, became the first Golf Club to be open to the public.
Stamford Bowls Club
Offering both indoor and outdoor rinks, the Stamford bowls club is an obvious choice for locals interested in bowls. The club offers taster days – complete with coaching by accredited coaches – for those curious about the sport, and welcomes all ages. Members can take part in friendly games, ranging up to national and even international level. they emphasise a welcoming environment encouraguing ‘good spirit and camaraderie’.
Stamford Striders Running Club
A running club that’s open to all. The athletics club has a supportive attitude towards runners, building a meaningful community atmosphere. Training sessions, a beginners course, interval training, races, it’s all on offer to members of the club. There’s the Rutland Round (which amounts to a 63 mile relay of sorts) and a tried and tested coashing structure. Its flagship event, the tough Stamford Valentine’s 30K, attracts runners from across the country each February.
Stamford MindSpace also hosts certain mindfulness themed events and that includes the MindSpace running group which takes place on some Fridays. See here for further information.
Stamford Cycling Club
You don’t have to be an aspiring Ed Lowe to join the cyclists of Stamford cycling club , it’s open to all. The site itself promoted the club as a “gateway to new friends” and “unforgettable rides”. With Sunday morning as well as and midweek after work rides, its easy to fit it around your life and work week. As one first ride review put it “Super chilled, no pressure to ride too hard and good chats. More crucially there was a pint at the end!”. Group rides, local routes and more. All good fun.
Combat Sports
Stamford ABC Boxing Club
With a competition grade ring (16ft x 18ft with sprung floor), and top facilities (floor to ceiling bags, pads, sparring gloves, headguards), the Stamford Boxing Club is a great introduction to this exciting sport. Their coaches are all ABA qualified and first aid trained so you’re in both competent and safe hands. It’s England Boxing Affiliated, and offers classes including sparring, circuit training and ladies only Monday to Friday for a small fee. All ages (9+) and fitness levels welcome.
Stamford & Oakham TaeKwonDo
Established in 1998, the Stamford & Oakham TaeKwonDo club is led by an 8th Degree Black Belt and twice GTUK world champion, so what better way to learn. With an emphasis on self improvement, family friendly atmosphere and welcoming of all ages / grades, The Stamford sessions take place Tuesdays & Thursdays 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM at Casterton College Rutland (Main Sports Hall), Ryhall Road, Great Casterton, PE9 4AT. Other Sports / Facilities
Beyond the above sports clubs, there’s also facilities like Stamford Fitness on Ryhall Rd, which in addition to offering modern gym facilities, also have classes such as Boxfit, Running, Yoga, Pilates and Netball. Stamford Leisure Centre (Leisure SK) for gym, aqua aerobics, and swimming. Stamford School offers an impressive sports curriculum too (as above, but also Hockey, Gymnastics, Water Polo, Fencing etc) , the vairous sports teams and fixtures can be found here. There’s also the Stamford Junior Knights backetball club and Stamford and Rutland junior Netball club for children in the Stamford area.
For a slight departure of sport, but still very much physical activities, there are a number of walking and rambling groups and clubs in and around the Stamford, Lincolnshire area too. Lincolnshire Ramblers (walking every Sunday 8-11 miles , along with coffee shops and picnics), Lincolnshire Walking Group for those in their 20s-40s (their social walk calendar is here), and The Walking Club , walking every other Sunday.
