stamford

Perched on the edge of Lincolnshire (where three other counties converge; Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, and Rutland), Stamford is a pretty market town full of with history and unique charm. With its beautifully preserved Georgian architecture, Stamford is considered by many to be one of England’s finest stone towns (in fact poet John Betjeman called it “the finest stone town in England). The banks of the River Welland are ideal for scenic walks, and nearby Rutland Water Nature Reserve perfect for birdwatching, sailing, and cycling.

Cobbled streets, medieval churches, picture postcard pubs and restaurants, and of course the town’s centerpiece; the magnificent Burghley House just south, a grand Elizabethan mansion surrounded by expansive parklands designed by Capability Brown. This stately home is a ‘must-visit’ for history enthusiasts. It’s also home to the Burghley Horse Trials and in 1967 was made the country’s first Conservation Area.

Every Friday, Stamford’s bustling market brings with it a variety of fresh local produce, artisan goods, and crafts. A smaller market is held every Saturday too. Stamford town centre and various sidestreets are dotted with independent shops, and quaint cafes, perfect for leisurely shopping or grabbing a coffee and bite to eat.

There’s no shortage of things to do in Stamford and the town even has its own theatre, the Stamford Corn Exchange, hosting music, comedy nights and more. The Stamford Arts Centre too, is home to a regular mix of movies and live shows, and there’s music at some of the town’s pubs too on occasion. Weekday or weekend, there’s much to see and experience in this hidden gem.
