Stamford Fair

stamford fairStamford mid lent fair is taking place from Monday 31st March – Saturday 5th April 2025, ending just before the arrival of the Stamford Circus. Owned by South Kesteven District Council, and presented by the Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain, it’s a highlight in Stamford calendar. It’s open daily till late at locations throughout the town centre (broad street to bath row, red lion square etc).

If you’ve been before, you’ll know that it’s well worth going to, and if you’ve not I’d certianly advise checking it out and it’s the  largest street fair in Lincolnshire. The origin of the fair dates back well over 1000 years when King John granted charter for the Stamford and Grantham mid-Lent fairs. In Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part 2  Shadow asks: “How a good yoke of bullocks at Stamford fair?” in reference to this very fair!

Whether you’re eager or brave enough to go on the rides, or just want to try food from one of the traditional fair stalls for hot food or sweets, it’s a fun time for all.

Brilliant fair but often the portend of bad weather – hoping for better this year for all fairground people.

My ancestors loved the ‘Cake Walk’ 70+ years ago. Some non PC sideshows in those days- who could forget Rona the Rat woman? Topical for any visiting Brummies – make them feel at home !
