When you combine the fact that Stamford is a beautiful Georgian market town, with it’s position as a meeting point of four separate counties, it’s no wonder that it’s a location that’s perfect for those with a passion for walking.
Walk 1: Stamford Town & Meadows Circuit (2–3 hours, ~3 miles)
Start: Stamford High Street / Town Centre
-
Begin in the heart of Stamford, where the stone-built Georgian buildings and narrow streets set the scene.
-
Stroll along St Mary’s Street and St George’s Square for local shops and historic façades.
Stamford Meadows
-
Drop down to the River Welland and follow the path through the Meadows. This gives you one of the finest views of Stamford’s skyline, with church spires and stone bridges reflected in the water.
St Leonard’s Priory
-
Continue east to visit the remains of St Leonard’s Priory, a medieval church ruin tucked just beyond the meadows.
Return via All Saints’ Place
-
Loop back into town, passing All Saints’ Church and ending near the market square, where cafés and pubs (like The Crown) make a perfect finish.
Walk 2: Stamford to Barnack Hills & Holes (Half-day, ~9 miles round trip)
Start: Stamford Town Centre
-
Head west from the town centre along Barnack Road. After leaving the houses behind, you’ll pass open countryside and farmland.
Barnack Village
-
Arrive in Barnack, with its handsome stone cottages and the impressive St John the Baptist Church. The village pub (The Millstone) makes a good refreshment stop.
Barnack Hills & Holes Nature Reserve
-
Explore this unique limestone grassland, formed from medieval quarrying. In spring and summer, the reserve is rich with wildflowers and butterflies, and the uneven landscape makes for an atmospheric wander.
Return to Stamford
-
Retrace your steps or loop back along quiet lanes (if time allows) for varied views. End your walk back in Stamford with a drink by the river at The Tobie Norris or another town centre pub.
There’s always our pub crawl page too, should one pint lead to another!
